ABSTRACT

The process of digitization had a great impact on the development of the economy of the European Union. The key steps taken by the European Commission in the direction of the development of the digital economy were the launch of two compatible strategies, the Digital Agenda and the Single Digital Market Strategy. Bearing in mind the fact of the increasing growth and importance of the digital economy, the European Commission has defined a unique policy related to this area. The single digital market of the European Union is based on the idea of a common market, the main purpose of which is to eliminate all trade barriers between member countries with the aim of increasing economic well-being. The development of the digital economy and the idea of a single digital market in the European Union has encountered numerous obstacles. As some of the basic factors that negatively affect the development of the digital economy, and the idea of a single EU digital market, the lack of digital literacy, insufficient development of a fast and high-quality network, and the low level of application of information technology in certain parts of the EU are mentioned. With a series of measures, the European Commission is trying to encourage the development and greater application of information technology, and to increase the level of digital literacy of the European population through numerous programs. Based on the research in the mentioned area, it can be concluded that the main steps in the development of the digital economy of the EU are the development of a single digital market of the European Union, and the development of broadband access, which includes access to the 5G network as a basic factor in achieving fast and efficient communication and cooperation throughout the EU.
